Internet users baffled by complex VAT rules are to get free advice from tax experts in cyberspace.
Commencing Friday (April 30) consultants will be available on-line to answer VAT-related questions for all visitors to * Northcliffe Newspapers Group's "This Is..." branded Web sites.
Between 1 and 2pm, on the last Friday of each month until November, Deloitte & Touche specialists will be available in the "chat" room to answer questions relating to any aspect of the complex and diverse topic of VAT.
This is Leicestershire will host the "question-and-answer" session, but access to the on-line debates will be available across the UK from all 12 Northcliffe-owned community Web sites.
Mr Ian Haslegrave, Senior VAT Consultant, Deloitte & Touche, said: "We will be looking at the VAT liability for small and start-up businesses, the benefits of voluntary registration, how to challenge assessments, VAT and property transactions, how charities deal with VAT, and any other issues that may be confusing people".
Mr Haslegrave added: "The Internet could be a powerful way to inform people about issues such as VAT."
This is the second time Deloitte & Touche experts have provided business advice via the Leicester Mercury-hosted Web site. In March, specialists were also available to answer Budget-related questions on-line.
Simon Crane, Leicester Mercury New Media Editor, said: "We are delighted to be able to provide people with this service. This event provides the opportunity to use the Internet as a platform to share information for local people - that is what the Internet is really all about."
This is part of an on-going series of business initiatives by "This Is Leicestershire" which will allow users to seek information from a wide range of experts across a variety of fields.
People wishing to improve their knowledge of VAT and other business issues can join the "chat" room via the following Web sites:
