DMGT has announced that it has sold a majority stake in its Soccernet football Web site which will allow it to focus its activities on the growing market for women on the Web.

Associated New Media, the Internet division of DMGT, announced yesterday that it has sold 60% of Soccernet, the world’s most popular football site, to the Buena Vista Internet Group (BVIG), a division of The Walt Disney Company.

Martin Dunn, Editor-in-Chief of Associated New Media, said: "One of the key strengths of our group is its strong affinity with women, and in particular women in the UK’s middle market.

"While Soccernet is the world’s favourite football site, its audience is global and predominantly male. We want to focus our energies on our strengths, and therefore consider Soccernet will be best exploited in partnership with a global sports specialist - Disney is our ideal partner."

Peter Williams, Finance Director of DMGT, said: "This deal allows us to concentrate our resources on two exciting Internet developments aimed at women in the UK: CharlotteStreet.com, our forthcoming women’s portal, and the complementary Zoom.co.uk e-commerce joint venture announced last month."

Note: the net assets of Soccernet being sold are negligible.
