Associated Newspapers Limited, a subsidiary of DMGT, today announces its intention to work together with franchisees across the UK on the future development of its free daily Metro title. Associated Newspapers first launched Metro in London in March 1999 and has subsequently rolled out editions in other cities.

Associated Newspapers has decided to enter into local franchise agreements to facilitate the continued expansion of the Metro as a national brand whilst utilising the benefits offered by local publisher presence, in terms of their local editorial, printing and distribution capabilities. Commercial arrangements will be put in place that permit the franchisees to share in the success of the Metro as a national brand, attracting national advertising. The first franchises will be awarded to Trinity Mirror Plc in Newcastle and Birmingham.

Lord Rothermere, Chairman of DMGT and of Associated Newspapers, said today:
"Metro has been a phenomenal success with commuters and advertisers. It is a different kind of newspaper and this arrangement shows an innovative approach to develop Metro to its full potential across the UK. It is good news for both our groups that a publisher of the calibre of Trinity Mirror has agreed to operate our first franchises".

Philip Graf, Chief Executive of Trinity Mirror plc, said today:
"I am very pleased that our two companies are to co-operate in the development of such an exciting publishing venture as Metro".
