Earlier this year, DMGT announced a five year programme of investment in its newspaper production facilities. In addition to the opportunity to produce additional pagination and colour for readers of the Daily Mail, The Mail on Sunday and the Evening Standard, the investment will generate additional revenue from colour advertising.
The planned investment programme runs from May 2001 with a view to completion in the first quarter of 2006 at a total cost of £95 million.
Two subsidiary companies will share in the investment: Associated Newspapers Limited and Northcliffe Newspapers Group Limited with existing facilities to be enhanced at Harmsworth Quays in London, Stoke, Derby, Bristol and Plymouth.
As part of the programme, Harmsworth Quays, the production services arm of Associated Newspapers, has announced the purchase of five Koenig & Bauer Courier flexo presses, together with upgrades of the remaining three presses, for a price in excess of £50 million. The purchase will be funded by cash, payment of which will be phased over the course of the project.
