Dolphin Software, a subsidiary of DMG Information, has made available a massive hazardous chemical database to help rescue organisations working in the disaster zone hit by hurricane Katrina.

Dolphin has made public more than 1.5 million records on hazardous chemical products to give rescuers and aid agencies detailed information on damaging materials that have been exposed by the massive wind damage.

Toxic material has been spread through the disaster area as thousands of companies have borne the brunt of the hurricane. The Online Hazardous Chemical Database includes essential first aid information, instructions onhow to handle or move the chemicals and treatment advice.

The database including information from more than 25,000 chemical manufacturers is now available for free on a special internet site that was built in only 4 hours.

Now that information is being used by the American Red Cross, the Army Corps of Engineers and by oil and chemical companies in the disaster area.

Red Cross officials in the area will be handing out postcards with the website address and the information has been passed to more than 180 Dolphin client operating sites that have been hit by Katrina.

The Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) containing first aid instructions, spill cleanup, and other hazardous material information will remain freely available until January next year. Documents can be searched, printed and distributed from the website.

Hundreds of other companies are now alerting rescue and re-building organisations about the MSDS information which Dolphin has built up over 14 years.

The work is not a commercial offering, and is solely intended to assist with the relief effort.

“The response has been magnificent,” said Dolphin CEO Mark Wysong. “This is aimed at giving real help to people in the disaster zone to allow them to handle these materials as safely as possible and to give vital health and first aid information to those treating the injured.”

Dolphin is a world leader in using MSDS data and aims to help any size or type of company that deals with chemicals build a safer world.
