Teletext Statement

Thursday 8 September 2005

Following completion of the annual business review, Teletext has identified a number of initiatives which will provide greater flexibility for continued investment in new digital services and the web. The move comes as Teletext reviews its business operations and practices in the run-up to digital switch-over in 2008.

As part of these initiatives, Teletext will be extending its long-standing partnership with the Press Association to include the provision of editorial content on Sport, Racing and Finance. The Press Association already provides Teletext with editorial content on national and regional news, regional sport and sports and racing data services.

The extended agreement ensures Teletext will continue to offer the highest quality content whilst providing the flexibility to invest for the future growth in digital television services, new classified areas and further development of the teletextholidays.co.uk website.

Regrettably, as part of the business review, there will be a reduction in staffing requirements. At present it is expected that editorial staffing levels will be reduced by approximately 55 with a further 15 reductions from other departments and the company is currently in consultation with staff that are affected by the changes.

Commenting on the announcement, Mike Stewart, Managing Director of Teletext said:

“It is important that Teletext adapts for a broadcast world which is increasingly digital. The extended partnership with PA enables us to invest further in our digital services. However, decisions that affect jobs are always difficult and we are doing everything we can to help our staff through this process.”
