Unique visits to MailOnline surged by almost a third last month, to a new all time high.

In January unique users of the site - the web version of the Daily Mail and the Mail on Sunday - reached 17.9m, representing a 21% increase on the previous month, bringing it closer than ever to Guardian Unlimited, the only UK newspaper website with more visitors. The figure is also 164% higher than January 2007.

Page views swelled by over a third month-on-month, to 142.2m, compared to 105m in December. Mail Online is also number one among online papers in terms of users from outside of the UK.

Strong showbusiness coverage and a recent search engine optimisation campaign were cited as factors behind the record results.
