FM Expo goes carbon neutral

Wednesday 05 May 2010

Following a takeover by dmg events, the FM Expo is placing a serious focus on sustainability and can announce the 2010 event will be carbon neutral.

As a consequence, the FM Expo will reduce its carbon footprint and any emissions associated with the event to zero.

With energy usage (air conditioning, water supply, power) in the life cycle of a building equating for two thirds of carbon dioxide emissions in the region, sustainability in facilities management is becoming a major issue. As a consequence the conference held at the FM Expo will host Royal Dutch Shell, Honeywell, RWN Trading, Farnek Aviral, Techam, MAF and EcoVentures; all who will be debating the green issue in facilities management.

And working with EcoVentures, the Middle East's leading emissions reduction firm, the FM Expo will make extra efforts to reduce its carbon footprint, such as implement recycling at the event and offset emissions through carbon credits.

"To become carbon neutral, an event must reduce its CO2 output to the smallest level possible and then net the remaining output to zero through carbon offsetting," explainsemissions reduction specialist, Karan Yadav from EcoVentures . "This means that for every one tonne of CO2 that is produced by an event, the organiser pays for an equivalent one tonne of CO2 to be reduced through a project that reduces carbon emissions in a verified manner."

Simon Mellor, Vice President of DMG world media added: "The UAE is well known for its substantial building projects and the effect they have on the environment. Indeed the UAE pumps out over 40 tons of CO2 per capita each year and so as an industry the topic of sustainability must continue to be addressed and debated. The FM Expo provides the perfect platform but at the same time we must practice what we preach in order that sustainability is taken seriously by the facilities
management industry."

The FM Expo will showcase 40 exhibitors and is a 'one stop shop' for everything related to Property and Facilities Management. It brings together the latest technology and solutions and provides the perfect forum for expert advice on facilities management - everything you need to manage and  maintain your built environment effectively, all under one roof.
